Marie Antoinette

 

This diptych is inspired by the slightly saucy portrait of Marie Antoinette by Vigee Le Brun.

At first blush, I was obsessed by the swagging and drapery – but all these surface shenanigans raise the issue of how to deal with the edge. And lo!

I’ve cropped the image to highlight the hint of what lies underneath.

Subsequently, revealing my own interest in the issues of surface and female power, I painted two series of works. Some of these are below.
